The prices listed above are approximations based on my experiences along with the retail pricing I Googled. Don’t get hung up on the specific prices, just look at the differences.

Identify Your Purpose

a book on is a very straight forward process. We’ve
published over 25 books and it is a service that we offer. If you do
not want to do it all yourself, contact us. Pricing starts at $1800.

The first step would be outlining your reason to get a publication. The main reason you publish a book will dictate the type of content you buy.

Private Glory

If that is for you, then write it yourself. Most authors won’t have
the ability to grasp that which you are and tell your own story. My
writers have done this a couple times, but it requires a lot of editing
on the part of the writer and may be easier to do yourself.

you write it, make sure and purchase 25 copies and send them to your
house. It’ll be good to see your name in print and also hold a hard
copy of all the hard work which you suffered! Your family and friends
will want a backup and will probably even leave you a review!

Professional Promotion

If you’re looking for this publication to promote your
professionally, consider paying a greater price to have an expert author
do the job. There are a lot of great writers on TextBroker. A quick suggestion, test multiple authors prior to hiring one for the entire publication. We have tested hundreds of writers prior to settling on a few of really great writers that we keep busy full time.

want the book to speak positively about you personally and your
organization and your business. Private stories blended into every
chapter is obviously great.

I don’t want to burst your bubble, but
very few people will read your publication. If this is to be
promotional, hire a ghostwriter. Placing your time and energy into
something nobody reads will be frustrating.

Amazon books are fantastic for SEO! You can get links back from your
author page and also publish your RSS feed so you’ll get a new link
each time you publish a new article!

In my experience, Amazon is
quite lenient with what they enable authors to perform. When we started
doing Amazon books in 2014, we initiated this plan and Amazon was more
strict with what they want and would not permit. We had writer
biographies rejected for a misspelling. Today you are able to publish
content that is subscribed and it’ll get accepted.

On top of this publication reviews are a great reason to reach out asking for hyperlinks. From the summary, it is sensible to also link to your company site since you’ve authored the publication.

Reputation Management

My preferred use of Amazon publications is for online reputation management
we’ve done quite a few! Here is the most significant part the book
publishing for ORM, you absolutely must include the name in the title of
the publication. How we achieve this is by making the name, “John
Smith’s 11 Tips for a Successful Career in SEO”. Using that as the
title is mandatory. If you just use “John Smith” as the writer and “11
Tips for a Successful Career in SEO” it will not rank. Well it could,
but rarely.

This was a lesson learned early on. Just trying to save a headache!

Writing Your Book

you’ve already recognized the purpose for writing a novel, you most
likely know who must do the writing. Here’s a quick recap.

If this is for you, you should write it.

If this for company marketing, hire a ghostwriter.

If that is for SEO, hire a ghostwriter.

If that is for standing management, hire a ghostwriter.

people fall in the kind of hiring a ghostwriter. In this area there
are hundreds and hundreds of people willing to do the composing and
their costs will probably be all over the area. I’ve had estimates as
low as $50 for a 49 page publication (11,304 absolute words) up to $1.25
per word. I am sure there are much more pricey writers beyond what I
have had quoted.

$50 compared to $14,130! Now, don’t get me
wrong, the quality is absolutely different. The 50 writer has been
given these instructions, “Write whatever you’d like about social
networking. Everything has to be unique and will be checked in
Copyscape and Google. No content that is subscribed.”

I actually
bought that $50 book! I printed it for a client (gasp!) . This
customer was what we call a alter ego. The customer had no company
interest and had recently retired and didn’t care what was online about
him as long as it was neutral or positive. The actual individual who
printed this novel was a persona we created of a 21 year old college

I’ve read some of the pages and they are just what you’d
expect from a $50 book. If you want this price level and point, start
with Fiverr, UpWork along with your favorite search engine optimization forum.

If you’d like a high quality of author, this is where TextBroker
comes in. I normally give my author a chapter outline and roughly 500
words of the type of book I’m expecting. I give him a sample of the
style and tone together with any other pertinent information. Here are
images from TextBroker if I was planning to hire a cheap, average and
expensive writer.

Assessing Your Novel

a true editor once again goes back to the objective. No matter how
proficient you’re, you’ll need editing, unless nobody is going to read
your book. For SEO and ORM you don’t want an editor just assume the
author did an superb job and print. If that really is the face of your
organization then you may wish to have it edited. Most good writers are
also good editors but there are also book editors who do nothing but
edit novels.

Most book editors (depending on how heavy your edits
are) can get through about 4 or even more pages each hour. Good editors
bill about $40 an hour which puts a 50 page book at about $500 in
editorial expenses. Editors additionally add at least a week
into the total timeline. If you are attempting to rush the book, this
week will be crucial.

I have never hired an editor.
I’ve never had a client request. I’ve sent copies of this book to
customers before publication and they’ve created their own edits, but
nobody has ever complained about my principal writer and he’s written
1.25 million words to me. Do the math on that one!

Publishing Your Book

only way I publish novels are via “self publication”. I don’t hire
large publishing houses nor do I plan to. My goals don’t include
distribution in bodily book stores, book signings or magazine
advertisements. Publishing the book yourself gets it listed online at many different websites including Amazon.

the precise match name of a few of my customers’ books shows 9,760
exact match benefits. That’s not the client name, but the name of the
book! For this specific client Amazon is ranked #3 supporting their
blog and LinkedIn. Amazon is great for publishing and an expensive
option isn’t required for SEO and reputation management.

Here are a Couple of things you’ll need until you publish your book:

  • Novel Cover (front, spine and back)
  • Author Biography
  • Book Description
  • Audible Book Cover (distinct format and size)
  • Novel files (.docx and .pdf)

of them are simple to do yourself while others have a pretty lengthy
learning curve. I will outline how we handle each one of these things.

Book Cover (front, back and spine)

has good designers that do it all day. I expect to spend $25-50 for a
cover. This should include the front, back and spine all in 1 file.
Before you order the cover you’ll need to get each of the articles for
the trunk. There’s usually a small section about the publication and
the author on the back cover. We frequently publish an image of this
author on the trunk too.

Author Biography

The book author can write this biography or you can do it yourself. I typically take for 200-400 words.

Book Description

description of the publication should be written by the author of this
book. They understand the book better than anybody else. This won’t be
included in the price so you’ll want to make sure and purchase it after
the book is finished.

Audible Book Cover (different format and size)

(ACX) requires a very odd size for novels. The cover must be an exact
2400px square. First using a square picture is weird and 2400 pixels is
so huge. The Fiverr designer may generally put in this on for $10. It
is also possible to ask the Fiverr designer to give you a cover of
front cover just and then squish this to 2400×2400. It seems horrible
but works.

Book files (.docx and .pdf)

majority of the time your author will provide you a .docx after which
the formatting starts. We’ve got someone who does all our publication
formatting, but it’s a massive burden every time we publish a new
publication. I can imagine the look he gives me each time I tell him we
need to publish a book. To complete this procedure you need to devote
countless hours fighting with Microsoft Word to get everything looking
just right. Don’t forget the Title Page, Table of Contents (TOC) and
the page numbering. You should not have a page number on the Title Page
nor the TOC, but Microsoft Word will not help you so…good luck.

How to Publish on Amazon

Publishing on Amazon is simple, and it is performed through
(an Amazon owned company). CreateSpace has an antiquated system that’s
sometimes buggy, but they have great support through email and phone.

CreateSpace’s system is quite self explanatory, click on the “Insert New Title” and follow the steps.

Listed below are a number of components which may be challenging if you are publishing a book for the first time.

ISBN is a exceptional number which resembles your social security
number, it’s specific to your publication. I use CreateSpace’s free
ISBN program. It is simple, just click on the button.

Distribute > Amazon

your book has been approved and printed you can click “Distribute” in
the left menu and then choose Amazon. This will send your CreateSpace
publication to Amazon and your book will be recorded on Amazon in a
couple of days!

Distribute > KDP

can be a timesaving feature in case you are going to print to Kindle.
This button will automatically send all your book info over to Kindle
(KDP) and you’ll only need to upload a new file (.docx) and review.
There are a few minor possibilities, but this will save yourself time.

Distribute > Pricing

minimum amount which you reserve can sell for is based on a few
factors, distribution options, cover, book size and quantity of pages.
I always place my books to sell for the minimum cost potential
($5.38 usually). This is important because you are going to be paying
this cost in order to send the books for inspection. Once you’re done
sending books for review you can keep the cost low or alter it.

Why did my Amazon book cost change?

seen lots of occasions that I place the cost to $5.38 however a few
months after the book is selling for $1. Xx, $2. Xx or $3. xx. It took
me a while to work out but what I discovered is that Amazon orders
novels based on anticipated sales. If you run a few giveaways, Amazon
sees those as sales and anticipates that volume to keep up. When you
stop running your audience, Amazon has a glut of books that nobody is
buying. They discount the price to help inspire them. If you are
pinching pennies you might have the ability to take advantage of this
cost difference, but in reality, if you can’t afford to ship a
publication for $5.38 but you can for $3.25 you’re in the wrong company.

How To Publish on Kindle

Publishing on Kindle is a very straightforward procedure. Head to,
login with your Amazon account and follow the instructions. If you’d
published through CreateSpace, use their built in feature to send the
information to KDP, then it is going to save time. See the left menu,
Distribute, KDP.

You will have to have all your documents prepared, but you need to already have these.

are a few major fields, Book Title, Name, and Novel Contributors. I’ve
used all of the additional things like keywords, categories and other
apparently good SEO factors, but they don’t really make a difference.
They simply take 5 minutes so that I still do them but they don’t help
for whatever that I’ve noticed.

Once you’ve filled everything out,
submit to KDP and withing a few days they will have approved or
rejected. If rejected, it’s usually a formatting problem and they will
give you feedback. Their support is excellent if you do have an issue
you can not figure out.

How To Publish on Audible

Publishing your audio book is a far more involved process. You’ll go to and in a nutshell do the following:

  • Find your book (search by author name or title)
  • Installation “Audition Script”
  • Accept a program
  • Wait for full book
  • Begin selling

Find your book (search by author name or title)

is quite simple, in the upper right corner click “Add a Title”. After
you find your publication there are a few settings, the most important
is your budget. You want a 50/50 royalty share. That usually means the
narrator gets 50% of the earnings of sales because they have done the

Installation “Audition Script”

You can use whatever you want for the audition script. I typically
use just a single paragraph of the introduction or a random choice in
the publication. I really don’t anticipate narrators to go through too
much work before I’ve selected them. A very simple paragraph will give
you a good idea of their tone, style and accent.

Accept an application

choose the narrator based on personal taste. I just listen to all of
the applications and pick my favorite. Once you accept a narrator, you
will upload the full book. Most of the time that I get about 2-5

Wait for complete publication

narrators will complete within a few weeks but it entirely depends on
them. Before you choose a narrator, it is possible to inquire how much
time it will take. This is important whether you are under a time

Begin selling

Frequently narrators will do a little marketing of the book too, it benefits them as they have a stake in the earnings.

Ways to Acquire Real Book Reviews

present search engine optimization plan will likely dictate the way you
get your books reviewed, and this is an absolutely crucial step. Not
only will this help your Amazon page rank, the reviews themselves will
often rank also.

I have a couple of reviews that are on the
initial page for clients, this is rare however. Out of the 200+ book
reviews I have done, I see about 5 to the first page right now.

will email you 25 download codes which you can to give reviewers. They
will be able to use the code to get your book for free.

Listed below are a few Fantastic ways to get book reviews:

  • Tomoson
  • Fiverr
  • LeanPub
  • Website community
  • Outreach

I have utilized
for a few years and it has been a really helpful system. You will find
other inspection platforms that I’ve tried, none have fulfilled my
needs like Tomoson. You can expect to cover just the price of shipping
if you’d like testimonials on free hosted sites such as and In my experience that these are a waste of time as they
rarely if ever rank for anything.

For self hosted domains you can
expect to pay $25-100 per inspection plus the price of shipping your
publication. This can quickly add up and many of the bloggers who write
testimonials will leave you frustrated. I’ve paid $50 for reviews to
get them copy and paste the description, forget to put in the link or
simply do nothing.

Tomoson’s refund policy is the worst aspect of
the entire system. If you need a refund, good luck. Envision a blogger
agrees to perform a review but not does anything even though you ship
the book. Tomoson keeps your cash but does not refund it. They also
don’t cover the bloggers. Your cash is stored at a Tomoson type escrow
account but there’s no way to view how much is there or which campaign
it’s for. You have to ask for an email from every review in every
effort and it gets very dull. I said this to them over a year ago,
plenty of time to institute a change. The system is excellent, but
needs changes. I offered to purchase the whole business but they were
not interested. Unfortunate.

Should they get large enough, I’m
sure I will be included as part of a class action lawsuit when someone
finally sues them. I know I’m due a pretty big refund.

you’ve got a good bit of experience with reviewers it is possible to
keep going back to those people. The entire database of bloggers is
limited and you’re going to see the very same people willing to review
over and over again. Once more this is a frustrating situation since if
you are promoting the same publication a few months later, you will get
duplicate applicants and you’ve got to manually cross-check to find out
if they reviewed the publication previously.

Virtually all the
reviewers have a revelation stating that the received a copy of the book
and/or financial compensation for their review. The same goes if they
opt to review on Amazon.

Fiverr is a
mixed bag of worth. There is certainly value for some tasks while some
must be avoided completely. Due to the FTC cracking down on reviews, I
avoid sites like Fiverr for reviews. My focus is on real people really
reviewing the novels. For each review, I send a copy of the book to
that individual. I’m off the hook since they have received a copy to
assess and it is not a fake review. I’ve a customer who does a lot of
her own reviews and she exclusively uses Fiverr for this work.

is a one-off service for record your book for sale. You don’t get
reviews, but that I guess is here since it functions exactly the same
notion, a link in addition to content on your book. You place the
minimum price and individuals choose what they want to cover above that
price. Since my aim is not to sell books, I set the minimum cost as low
as you can, 99 pennies. I’ve sold probably 5 books total on, but the publication listing page has a good opportunity to
rank well for the customer name and/or title of the book. There is not
any price and it only takes a few minutes.

Website network

time I have built a broad network of bloggers. These are real men and
women who all have their very own blogs. I can send out an email or
post in my FB group and get reviews pretty easily. The price is
generally higher but so is the grade. I may also pre-screen each domain
and choose the writers that meet a specific threshold of metrics or

Should you do a great
deal of outreach, you may most likely include book reviews in your
existing workflow. Fix your email templates to chat about a book
review, offer to send the book at no charge. Depending on the reaction
rate you might want to mention that you can cover the blogger to get
their time to browse the book in anticipation of the review.

Review Notes and Ideas

reviews can be complicated. Some people today realize they’re giving a
service to you and make certain their review reflects. Rather than
dwelling on something that they do not like, they will opted to say the
positive. I’d one reviewer that literally talked about how well the
cover was designed, the use of color and also the quality of the
printing. When I asked her regarding the content, she said she hated
the publication. She choose to make sure review about something she
enjoyed, really she was probably a positive individual that you would
love to be buddies with.

Be prepared for negative reviews. No
matter what you do, you’ll find someone who’s negative about everything.
I always try to look at their last few posts or reviews to find out
which type of reviewer they are. If you notice someone is quite
negative, avoid them.

Shipping your books

going to give you the best nugget that you will read in this entire
guide. When shipping your books you can perform it manually through
Createspace or even Amazon. Each of those options will need you to
input the name and address of every person you ship to. This is the
toughest way possible. Here’s the golden nugget, Amazon Giveaways.

If you scroll to the bottom of the Amazon product pages you’ll notice a “giveaway” section

Set up an Amazon Giveaway to ship books for review

might not look like much but if you set up a giveaway and use Amazon’s
attribute of “unique links” you will be given a list of unique links
that are one time use only. Instead of collecting names and addresses
you just send this link to a person and Amazon does the rest. You’ve
paid for your book and shipping and Amazon collects their title and
ships the publication. The best part is it’ll ship based on their
Amazon account. If they’ve Prime, you’ll get a refund for shipping
costs because the book ships free!

This saves countless hours of
collecting and sending books. When you’ve got a client who wants 25
books sent to them directly, is cheaper but shipping
takes more.

All of the Boring Parts of Publishing

Having published more books than most authors ever will, we have found the easiest way to get things done!

You’ll need the following:

  • ISBN Number
  • eBook File
  • Barcode
  • Licensing Information

ISBN Number

can be provided by Createspace free of cost. There are services which
sell ISBN amounts but I do not know the distinction, the Createspace
ISBN’s have worked for every one my requirements.

EBook Document

submit your book to Kindle (KDP) you’ll only want the book in .docx
format. This is different because Createspace usually requires a PDF.

designer will render a clean area on the back of the book and
CreateSpace will put the barcode on mechanically. You do not need to do

Licensing Information

I have
tested all the difference licensing options and haven’t found some to be
a benefit or drawback. I really don’t have a suggestion but read
through and pick what seems best.

Closing Thoughts

you’re seeking to make money with your novels, you are better off using
a part time job. Here are my entire earnings from CreateSpace around
about two years.

you know what a lot of the money was? My buys on Amazon. I think I
have sold about 50 novels to real people, the rest are the copies that I

This wasn’t worth the time and I spent much greater than that just in writing costs. My promotional budget for these books was easily 10 times more than these earnings.
This is why I cautioned you to figure out the purpose for writing a
novel. I didn’t publish these books to earn money, I published for SEO
and ORM.

My purpose wasn’t to earn money, get famous, or get an
invitation to the White House. Those things would be nice, but
publishing a book is not the best way to make it happen.

let me know what you think in the comments. Have you published a book?
